Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 family is entering the final year of major Android updates, according to a new report from Engadget. The tablets are expected to receive Samsung’s One UI 9 update, based on Android 17, during 2026, after which their software support will move into a security-update phase rather than continuing with new major Android versions. 1

What is changing

The Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S9+, Tab S9 Ultra, Tab S9 FE and Tab S9 FE+ launched in 2023 with One UI 5.1, based on Android 13. Samsung promised four generations of major operating-system updates and five years of security patches for the range, meaning the 2026 Android 17 update is the last major platform upgrade identified in the report. 1

That does not mean the tablets are immediately abandoned. Security updates are expected to continue until around 2028 for the main Tab S9 models, while the Tab S9 FE variants are covered by the same broad support window described in the report. Exact rollout dates can vary by model, market and cellular configuration, so owners should not assume that every regional firmware release will arrive on the same day.

Samsung’s current support policy is more generous than the one attached to these 2023 tablets. The company’s newer Galaxy Tab S10, S11 and S12 families are covered by a seven-year update commitment, according to the comparison in the report. 1 That longer promise is useful context for anyone considering a discounted Tab S9: the older model may still have plenty of life left, but its major-feature runway is now shorter than the support offered by newer generations.

Samsung’s official Galaxy Tab S9 product page still lists the family and its core hardware, including the Tab S9, Tab S9+ and Tab S9 Ultra. 2 The range includes the S Pen and different screen sizes, with the Ultra positioned as the largest model. The official product imagery used here depicts those three flagship tablets together.

Our opinion

The Galaxy Tab S9 family is not suddenly obsolete, but this is an important dividing line for buyers. A good discount could still make one worthwhile for streaming, reading, drawing and everyday Android use, particularly if five years of security patches remain available. However, anyone buying primarily for long-term software features should compare the price carefully with a newer Galaxy Tab model before committing. The biggest practical question is not whether the Tab S9 will stop working in 2026; it is whether the saving is large enough to justify reaching the end of its major-update cycle now.
