Samsung reportedly seeks more display driver chip suppliers
A report says Samsung is looking to add GlobalFoundries as a second source for display driver ICs after production pressure on the Galaxy Z Fold8.
Samsung is reportedly looking to broaden its supply of display driver integrated circuits (DDIs), the chips that connect a phone's processor and display panel. GSMArena, citing a ZDNet Korea report, says the move follows pressure on production of the Galaxy Z Fold8.1
DDIs control how a panel's pixels are driven, including the red, green and blue sub-pixels that make up the image. Samsung Display's explainer shows the driver IC sitting between the display panel and the rest of the device's electronics, translating signals into the changes each pixel needs.2
Why the supplier change matters
According to the report, Samsung has been relying on United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) as its sole DDI supplier. When UMC reportedly reached full capacity and could not provide additional chips, Samsung is said to have cut its September production plans for the Galaxy Z Fold8. GSMArena reports that the shortfall affected revenue figures, although Samsung's own confirmation is not included in the cited report.1
The proposed second source is GlobalFoundries. The report says Samsung is interested in the foundry's 22nm and 28nm production facilities, with the chips potentially intended for entry-level Galaxy A-series phones by the end of 2027. That timing and product split are still reported details, not an announced Samsung roadmap.1
For consumers, the immediate issue is not a new Fold8 feature but supply resilience. A phone can be ready to ship while a small, specialised component becomes the bottleneck. Adding another qualified supplier could reduce that risk, but qualifying a new chip source takes time and does not guarantee that production constraints disappear overnight.
Our opinion
The reported plan is a reminder that smartphone supply chains are often constrained by invisible components rather than headline features. Samsung's next useful update would be confirmation of the supplier arrangement and a clearer explanation of which products would use the additional capacity. Until then, the GlobalFoundries link should be treated as a reported possibility, not a finished deal.
The hero is a Samsung Display diagram showing the relationship between a display panel, its driver IC and individual sub-pixels. It is attributed to Samsung Display in the GSMArena source and is used here because it directly explains the technology at the centre of the report.12
