OnePlus rolls out Android 17 to the OnePlus 15 and Pad 4 early
OnePlus has begun a phased Android 17-based ColorOS 17 rollout for the OnePlus 15 and Pad 4 ahead of its advertised schedule.
OnePlus has started rolling out its Android 17-based ColorOS 17 update to the OnePlus 15 and OnePlus Pad 4 ahead of the schedule previously announced for the two devices. The initial rollout is being staged, so not every owner will see the update immediately. 1
The timing matters because OnePlus had listed October 29 and 30 as the first rollout window for the OnePlus 15, OnePlus Pad 4, OnePlus 15R, OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13s. The company’s community schedule also listed later waves for other devices, making this early arrival a limited start rather than a promise that every supported handset is already covered. 1
What is changing
ColorOS 17 brings a redesigned interface, refreshed animations, updated Quick Settings and more customisation options. OnePlus also says the software includes updated privacy controls and better background-process management, which should help battery efficiency on compatible devices. The rollout is based on Android 17, although the exact feature mix can vary by model and region.
The OnePlus 15 is the more obvious flagship recipient. OnePlus markets the phone with a 165Hz display, a 7,300mAh battery and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 hardware, while its official product page presents OxygenOS 16 as the launch software. 3 The move to ColorOS 17 therefore represents a notable software change for owners of a newly released device, particularly in regions where OnePlus is shifting away from the OxygenOS identity.
The OnePlus Pad 4 is included in the same opening wave. Its official product page highlights a 13.2-inch 3.4K display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 performance, a 13,380mAh battery and PC-focused features such as the Smart Keyboard and Stylo Pro accessories. 2 A tablet update can be just as consequential as a phone update here, because changes to window management, multitasking and cross-device sharing affect how the larger screen is used day to day.
OnePlus says eligible users can choose whether to move to ColorOS 17, and the company has discussed a route back to OxygenOS. The available rollback versions and the precise regional conditions remain less clear, however, so owners should check the update notice for their specific model before committing. It is also sensible to back up important data and wait for early reports if the update is not urgent.
The regional catch
OnePlus has been clear that the rollout will happen in phases. The first devices and regions to receive the stable package may be those that participated in the open beta, with wider availability following later. That means a missing notification does not necessarily indicate a fault, an unsupported device or a cancelled rollout.
The company’s schedule is also a reminder that Android version labels do not tell the whole story. The practical changes will come through OnePlus’ own ColorOS layer, and features can be enabled at different times depending on hardware, market and carrier requirements. Owners should rely on the update screen and OnePlus’ regional support information rather than installing an unrelated package from an unverified source.
Our opinion
An early rollout is welcome, but the important test is not the date on the announcement. OnePlus needs to make the transition predictable for people who bought the OnePlus 15 or Pad 4 expecting a familiar software experience. Clear regional notices, a dependable rollback path and stable support for existing apps matter more than arriving a few days before the advertised window. Until those details are equally clear, this looks like a promising start rather than a reason to rush every device onto ColorOS 17.
