iPhone Duo reportedly jailbroken on launch day

Calif says it jailbroke an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1, but the research team has no public tool for ordinary users.

Apple iPhone Duo opened to show its foldable display and iOS interface

The iPhone Duo has reportedly been jailbroken within hours of its launch, although the team behind the work is not offering a consumer-ready tool. Calif demonstrated the claim on an iPhone Duo running iOS 27.1, showing the phone’s icons and widgets moving around the home screen and adding an anime character to the display. MacRumors reported the demonstration and linked it to Calif’s public post.1

That makes this a technical proof of concept rather than an invitation to modify your own phone. Calif security researcher Stefan Esser told Heise that the group does not plan to release a jailbreak tool for end users, though a proof of concept may be published later.1 The team also said the work relied on vulnerabilities already disclosed to Apple, or vulnerabilities it intends to disclose soon.

What the jailbreak claim shows

The demonstration is notable because it arrived almost immediately after the iPhone Duo went on sale. Apple describes the device as its first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display, an outer display, Touch ID and a redesigned iOS experience for different folded and open positions.2 Calif’s demonstration appears to have altered the normal software behaviour rather than simply showing an unusual Apple feature: the home-screen icons and widgets bounce around, while an animated character sits over the interface.1

Calif had already shown an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 18 Pro running iOS 27.0.1 the previous week. In that demonstration, the phone retained root access after rebooting, which is the key distinction between an untethered jailbreak and a modification that needs to be re-applied after every restart.1

Why most owners cannot use it

The important limitation is availability. Calif has not released a public jailbreak for iPhone Duo, and Esser said the team is focused on demonstrating its research rather than supporting ordinary users. The vulnerabilities used for the iOS 27.0.1 work are also expected to be addressed in iOS 27.2, according to Esser’s comments reported by MacRumors.1

That leaves the iPhone Duo jailbreak as an early warning about the platform’s security surface, not a practical feature for buyers. A proof of concept could help other researchers understand how the device and iOS 27.1 were compromised, but copying unverified instructions or installing an unofficial package would carry obvious security and stability risks. Apple’s official iPhone Duo page presents the phone as a controlled foldable experience built around its own software and hardware design.2

Our opinion

The timing is the story here: Calif has shown that a brand-new foldable iPhone is not immune to serious research attention, but the lack of a public tool matters more than the flashy demonstration. Until the team publishes reproducible research and users can assess the risks, this is best understood as a security milestone rather than a reason to jailbreak an iPhone Duo. Apple’s response will be worth watching, particularly as iOS 27.2 approaches and the company addresses the vulnerabilities behind the claim.
