iFixit gives Apple's iPhone Duo a 5/10 repairability score

iFixit gives Apple’s foldable its best score yet for a foldable phone, but warns that the inner screen and hinge remain difficult to repair.

Apple’s iPhone Duo has earned a repairability score of 5 out of 10 from iFixit after the repair specialists took the foldable apart. That is the best score iFixit has awarded to a foldable phone, but the teardown also finds that the device’s inner screen and hinge could be expensive and time-consuming to repair.12

The result is notable because foldable phones tend to make even routine repairs awkward. iFixit says the Duo borrows several repair-friendly ideas from conventional iPhones: its batteries can be released with electricity, the outer display is relatively straightforward to remove and several components can be reached without dismantling the entire handset.1

What the teardown found

The iPhone Duo’s outer screen and battery design are the clearest positives. iFixit says the outer trim came away intact, while the batteries can be removed with a process that avoids the adhesive-heavy disassembly often associated with modern phones. Those choices do not make the Duo simple to fix, but they help it outperform other foldables on iFixit’s scoring system.1

The hinge is a more worrying story. iFixit followed dust treated with ultraviolet-reactive material through the phone and found that some reached the hinge mechanism. The amount was lower than in the team’s comparisons with the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 8, but enough dust entered the mechanism to produce a crunching sound.12

That matters because Apple gives the iPhone Duo an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. The teardown does not establish that the rating has failed, but it does show why owners should not treat the foldable as immune to contamination around its moving parts. iFixit also links the phone’s reported screen failures to the stress created by the main display crease pressing against the hinge’s central support bar, while noting that further investigation is needed.12

The display’s crease-hiding design is more successful. iFixit examined the Duo’s matte nano-texture under a microscope and found that its surface scatters reflected light, helping the open screen look smoother. The effect disguises the crease rather than eliminating the mechanical stresses created by repeatedly folding the panel.1

Repairs could still be costly

The 5/10 score should not be read as a promise of easy home repair. iFixit describes the inner display and hinge as the most difficult parts of the phone to replace because of their complicated construction. Those repairs require substantial time and labour, and the teardown suggests that owners will need to treat the folding screen carefully.1

The finding gives the iPhone Duo a more complicated repair profile than its score alone suggests. Some batteries and external components are unusually accessible for a foldable, while the parts most exposed to the cost and complexity of a major failure remain difficult to reach. In practice, the Duo is more repairable than its rivals in some important ways, not universally easy to repair.

Our opinion

iFixit’s score is useful precisely because it avoids treating repairability as an all-or-nothing label. Apple appears to have made sensible choices around the battery and outer display, and those choices matter for the kind of service work that can otherwise turn a premium phone into disposable hardware. But the inner screen and hinge are the parts most likely to produce a painful bill, so a strong score for a foldable still comes with a large asterisk.

The iPhone Duo looks like a meaningful step forward for foldable repairability, not a repair revolution. Its 5/10 is the ceiling iFixit has given this category, yet the teardown’s practical warning is clearer than the number: keep dust away from the hinge, protect the inner display and expect complicated work if either fails.
