8849’s Tank 5 Pro is a rugged phone with a thermal camera, 2K projector and huge battery

The 8849 Tank 5 Pro is the sort of rugged phone that looks as if someone asked a smartphone to prepare for the apocalypse, pack a cinema projector and never see a charger again.

The handset is listed at US$1,199 and combines a large battery with thermal imaging, a 2K projector, night vision and a rugged design. Those features are eye-catching, but the performance figures currently come from 8849 rather than independent testing.

What's actually going on

The Tank 5 Pro has a 6.73-inch 3K AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 3,000 nits brightness. Its headline feature is a 17,600mAh battery paired with 120W charging, which 8849 says can deliver a full charge in about 90 minutes.

The phone also includes a 2K projector rated at 220 lumens, a thermal camera, a 50MP main camera, a 50MP telephoto camera, a 50MP night-vision camera and a 32MP front camera.

Other listed specifications include up to 18GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, Wi-Fi 7, eSIM support, a laser rangefinder and Android 16. 8849 says the handset will receive five years of security updates.

The company says US, Canadian and Australian orders are shipping from local warehouses, with Europe, the UK and Asia expected to ship by 10 September 2026. UK pricing, VAT treatment and exact delivery timing were not confirmed in the available material.

Why you should care

Rugged phones usually ask buyers to compromise on size, camera quality or everyday usability in exchange for durability and battery life. The Tank 5 Pro is trying to avoid that compromise by turning every unusual phone feature up to eleven.

The problem is that a giant specification sheet is not the same as a great phone. Projector brightness, thermal-camera usefulness, charging behaviour and long-term software support all need real-world testing.

Our opinion

The Tank 5 Pro is gloriously excessive, and that is exactly why it is interesting. A thermal camera and projector are not essentials, but they are more memorable than another handset promising an indistinguishable slab of AI features.

At US$1,199, though, buyers should demand more than a ridiculous list of specifications. Wait for independent testing and confirmed UK pricing before treating this as a serious alternative to a mainstream flagship. It is a fascinating tool, but it is also a very expensive pocket full of “just in case”.
