Sceye and SoftBank say they have completed a stratospheric connectivity demonstration linking ordinary mobile devices across the Pacific. The companies describe the test as a step towards high-altitude platform systems becoming part of future communications infrastructure.
The mission travelled from New Mexico to Japan over 13 days, covering more than 15,000 kilometres according to Sceye. The companies have not released sustained throughput, latency or coverage figures, so this is a technology demonstration rather than a ready-to-buy mobile service.
What's actually going on
Sceye says its Service Test 1 platform connected unmodified mobile devices through SoftBank’s core network. That matters because the test did not depend on users carrying a special satellite handset or installing an unusual antenna.
The demonstration also included high-altitude platform system, or HAPS, edge computing and communications with drones. In plain English, the platform is intended to combine a flying communications relay with some processing capability rather than simply acting as a dumb signal repeater.
The mission launched from New Mexico on 9 August 2026 and travelled towards Japan. Sceye describes the work as progress towards commercial HAPS infrastructure, but neither company has confirmed a commercial launch date, pricing, regulatory approval or a consumer coverage map.
The release is a company announcement, and its operational claims should remain attributed. No independent measurements for speed, latency, reliability or coverage area were supplied.
Why you should care
High-altitude platforms sit between terrestrial towers and satellites. They could potentially cover difficult areas without requiring a full network of ground infrastructure, while operating closer to Earth than a conventional satellite.
The unmodified-device test is the appealing part. If the technology matures, users might connect through existing phones rather than buying a completely separate satellite communications device. That is still a possibility, not a promise.
Our opinion
The idea is exciting, but the marketing is currently flying higher than the evidence. Connecting phones over a long-distance demonstration is impressive; proving reliable everyday service with sensible costs is the difficult bit.
Sceye and SoftBank deserve attention for pushing HAPS beyond the concept stage, but we need real performance figures and a regulatory roadmap before treating this as the next mobile network. For now, it is a promising test flight — not a replacement for your phone contract.
