Shopify's Canvas turns store design into a chat with Sidekick

Shopify has introduced Canvas, a workspace where merchants reshape every page of their online store by talking to the company's AI agent, Sidekick.

Shopify has launched Canvas, a new design surface that turns an entire online store into a single workspace. It is rolling out to merchants over the coming days and is built around Sidekick, the platform's AI agent.

Design the whole store, not one page

Canvas lays every page of a store out side by side. Merchants can pan across them to judge how the shop feels as a whole, spot inconsistencies in branding, then zoom in to fix the details. Edits can be made by clicking directly on an element or by describing the change to Sidekick in a chat, and the results appear in Canvas in real time.

Merchants are not editing a static preview. Canvas renders the real code behind the store, so pages can be previewed with full interactivity and animation, and checked against different products, collections and screen sizes.

An agent that remembers

Shopify says Sidekick behaves like a collaborator rather than a command line. It asks questions, proposes approaches and takes feedback, carries earlier design decisions into later work, and takes screenshots of its own output to check it before handing the design back.

Ben Sehl, a director of product at Shopify, said the aim is to help entrepreneurs get closer to the store they picture in their heads. Austin Knight, a design director at the company, said Sidekick's suggestions are grounded in each theme's own design rules and in a body of evaluation data, so the ideas stay tasteful rather than generic.

Our opinion

Canvas is the most interesting thing Shopify has shipped in a while, because it changes the unit of work. Most site builders still think in pages; Canvas thinks in a whole shop, which is much closer to how a brand actually lives online. The risk is the one that dogs every AI design tool: a thousand stores that look pleasant, consistent and interchangeable. Sidekick will be judged not by how fast it builds a shop, but by whether it still lets a small brand look like itself.
