OnePlus Buds Clip uses a clever trick to fit either ear

OnePlus has revealed open-ear Buds Clip earbuds that detect which ear they are worn in, but pricing and availability remain unconfirmed.

OnePlus has revealed the Buds Clip, a pair of open-ear wireless earbuds built around a flexible clip that can be worn in either ear. The company has published the product on its global website, while pricing and availability remain unannounced. 1

The most unusual feature is the symmetrical design. Sensors detect which ear each bud is sitting in and automatically route the left and right stereo channels, so users do not need to identify a left or right bud before putting them on. OnePlus says the adaptive nickel-titanium arc is designed to flex around different ear shapes without pressing too hard.

The Buds Clip weighs 5.2 grams per earbud and carries a TÜV Rheinland Comfortable Fit certification, according to the specifications published by OnePlus. The open-ear design leaves users aware of their surroundings rather than sealing the ear canal, although the company notes that actual comfort and sound leakage can vary with the environment and how the earbuds are used. 1

For audio, the earbuds use an 11mm woofer and 9mm tweeter, separate DACs and tuning co-created with Dynaudio. They support LHDC 5.0 alongside AAC and SBC, and OnePlus says its Dipole Sound Field technology is intended to reduce leakage. A six-microphone system and a 6nm AI Audio Chip are used for calls, with the company also advertising an AI Translate feature on compatible OnePlus phones.

Battery life is listed at up to 9.5 hours from the earbuds in AAC mode, or up to 40 hours with the charging case. The earbuds are rated IP55 for dust and water resistance, support Bluetooth 6.1, dual-device connections, Google Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair. OnePlus is showing Pearl White, Pebble Gray and Twilight Rose finishes, but has not yet given a price or confirmed launch markets. 12

Our opinion

The Buds Clip is interesting because the either-ear detection solves a small but genuinely irritating problem: grabbing a single open-ear bud should not require checking its markings first. The design also gives OnePlus a clear point of difference in a crowded open-ear market. The unanswered questions are the important ones, though. Until pricing, regional availability and independent testing of comfort, sound leakage and battery life arrive, this is a promising reveal rather than a product recommendation.

For now, the Buds Clip looks like a practical experiment in making open-ear audio less fussy. Whether that clever clip is worth choosing over established alternatives will depend on the price and how well the automatic stereo switching works outside OnePlus's own demonstrations.
