MLB redesigns its app for iPhone Duo's foldable screen

MLB has redesigned its app for iPhone Duo so fans can watch live baseball while keeping scores and stats visible on the foldable phone.

Major League Baseball has redesigned its app for Apple’s iPhone Duo, using the foldable phone’s two displays to put live video and real-time statistics closer together. The league says fans can prop the device open with the broadcast on the upright half and scores, box data and other information on the lower half. 1

The update arrives as the iPhone Duo goes on sale and just as the World Series begins. TechRadar reports that MLB prepared the experience in 44 days after Apple announced the device, while Apple’s own newsroom describes the app as one of the first examples of developers adapting to the foldable iPhone’s larger inner display. 12

The app is designed around more than simply making a phone screen larger. With the iPhone Duo partially folded, viewers can keep the game on one section while following the score and supporting information on the other. Users can also watch in full screen, switch between the outer and inner displays, or keep another app open alongside the MLB experience.

MLB says it is also using artificial intelligence to generate extra context about plays, players and game situations. That information is intended to sit alongside the league’s existing Game Day experience, giving fans a single place to watch, read and check the numbers rather than jumping between video, a score page and a separate conversation app.

Apple says the iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, with both screens sharing the same aspect ratio so apps can transition between them more smoothly. Those hardware details are important to MLB’s approach: the app can remain useful when the device is closed, but gain a larger, more flexible layout when it is opened or placed on a table. 2

The timing gives MLB a prominent showcase. The World Series is one of the biggest tests a sports app can face, and the foldable layout makes the use case immediately understandable: live action above, live data below. Whether it changes how most fans watch baseball will depend on the quality of the stream, the accuracy of the statistics and how well the interface behaves beyond the launch-day demo.

This is also a significant relationship for Apple. MLB was among the early App Store partners, and both companies have previously worked together on live video delivery. The iPhone Duo update therefore looks less like a one-off compatibility patch and more like an attempt to establish a template for foldable sports viewing. 12

Our opinion

MLB’s iPhone Duo strategy makes more sense than a generic “bigger screen” redesign because it gives the extra space a job. Live sport naturally produces two simultaneous needs — watching what is happening and understanding the numbers — and the folded layout can serve both without asking fans to keep switching views. The harder test will be whether the experience remains readable and responsive during a long game, rather than merely looking impressive in launch photography.

For now, MLB has provided one of the clearest demonstrations of why a foldable phone might matter. It is not a new way to watch baseball by itself, but it is a more convincing use of the format than stretching a conventional phone app across a larger panel.
