Khronos Group opens Brussels entity for EU projects

The consortium behind Vulkan, OpenGL and glTF has created Khronos AISBL in Brussels so it can join EU-funded research programmes such as Horizon Europe as a formal project partner.

The Khronos Group, the consortium behind Vulkan, OpenGL, glTF and OpenXR, has set up a European legal entity in Brussels so it can take part in EU-funded research and innovation programmes as a formal project partner.

What has actually changed

The new body is Khronos AISBL, an international non-profit association headquartered in Brussels. It operates under the governance of The Khronos Group Inc., and the organisation says membership, its IP framework and its specification processes are unchanged. The practical difference is legal standing inside the EU: European organisations can now name Khronos as a partner in projects funded through programmes such as Horizon Europe, something the consortium says was not previously possible.

Why open standards matter to EU projects

Khronos expects the entity to open up collaboration for European companies, research institutions and consortia working on virtual worlds, industrial digital twins, AI, robotics, advanced visualisation and immersive technologies. The move lines up with the European Commission's Virtual Worlds Partnership and a broader push for royalty-free, interoperable standards that let research output and commercial products work across borders.

“Khronos standards are already developed and adopted by organizations throughout Europe, but until now our ability to participate directly in EU-funded initiatives has been limited,” said Neil Trevett, president of The Khronos Group. Matthieu Worm, president of the Virtual Worlds Association, the private-sector partner in the EU's Co-Programmed Partnership for Virtual Worlds, added that the European entity “creates new opportunities for European consortia and research programs to engage directly with one of the world's most influential open standards organizations”.

Our opinion

Standards bodies rarely make headlines, but this one is worth noting. Graphics and spatial-computing specifications decide which hardware can run which software, and for years the practical centre of gravity for that work has sat outside Europe. A Brussels address does not move the engineering, but it does change who gets a seat when EU money is handed out and what happens to the results: instead of European research quietly building on top of specifications it had no part in writing, the consortia can now bring findings back into the standard itself. The risk is symbolic dilution, another office and another logo. The test will be whether Vulkan, OpenXR and glTF roadmaps start carrying visible European research contributions rather than just a European membership list.
