Apple unveils redesigned iPad mini with OLED and IP67 water resistance

Apple's redesigned iPad mini adds an OLED display, A20 Pro performance and IP67 water resistance, but still stops short of 120Hz.

Apple has unveiled a redesigned iPad mini with a larger OLED display, the A20 Pro chip and IP67 water and dust resistance. 1

A larger OLED screen

The new iPad mini uses an 8.5-inch OLED display, up from the previous model's 8.3-inch LCD panel. Apple says slimmer bezels allow the larger screen to fit within the same footprint, while OLED brings deeper blacks, higher contrast and more than twice the previous generation's peak brightness. 1

A thinner design with water resistance

The tablet is 5.4mm thick and gains an IP67 rating. It also adds a 12MP Center Stage camera on the landscape edge, improved audio, faster connectivity and fast charging.

A20 Pro performance

Apple's A20 Pro chip brings a five-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Neural Accelerators in each GPU core. The company says it supports the next generation of Apple Intelligence features in iPadOS 27, including a more capable Siri.

Price and availability

Pre-orders open on October 28, with availability from November 6. The new iPad mini starts at $699 in the US, while the cellular model starts at $849. 1

Our opinion

This is the iPad mini update the range has been waiting for. OLED, thinner bezels and water resistance address the tablet's most obvious weaknesses, although the 60Hz display and higher price keep it from being an automatic upgrade for everyone. The compact shape still gives the mini a clear purpose: it is a high-end tablet for people who value portability first.

Apple's redesign makes that proposition more convincing, even if it does not turn the iPad mini into a laptop replacement or a high-refresh gaming screen.
