OLED MacBook Air and iMac remain some way off, report says

Apple is testing OLED displays for future MacBook Air and iMac models, but the next refreshes are expected to keep LCD panels.

Apple is testing OLED displays for future MacBook Air and iMac models, but neither product appears close to making the switch, according to Bloomberg reporting cited by MacRumors.1

The next refreshes of both product lines are expected to continue using LCD panels. Mark Gurman’s report gives no timetable for an OLED MacBook Air or OLED iMac, while MacRumors says Apple is still some way from bringing the technology to those machines.1

That distinction matters because Apple’s current Mac range still presents the MacBook Air and iMac as established LCD-based products. Apple’s own Mac line-up describes the MacBook Air as a thin, portable laptop and the iMac as an all-in-one desktop, but does not announce an OLED transition for either model.2

What we know

The report is about testing, not a product launch. It does not confirm panel sizes, suppliers, pricing or a release window. It also does not mean the next MacBook Air or iMac will use OLED. Those machines may receive routine processor and design updates first, leaving the display change for a later generation.

OLED could eventually bring deeper blacks, stronger contrast and more flexible product design, but it would also introduce questions around cost, power consumption and long-term image retention. Those trade-offs are especially relevant to a laptop that is expected to deliver long battery life and an all-in-one desktop that is sold as a straightforward family and creative-work machine.

Our opinion

This is a useful reminder that Apple’s display roadmap is not the same thing as its launch calendar. OLED MacBooks have been discussed for years, but “in testing” leaves plenty of room for the schedule to move. The sensible reading is that Apple is investigating a future upgrade while the next MacBook Air and iMac remain LCD products. Anyone waiting specifically for OLED should treat this as confirmation of direction, not a promise of an imminent model.
