Apple acknowledges small number of iPhone Duo display issues

Apple says a small number of iPhone Duo units have an issue affecting the inner display after reports of cracked hinges and damaged screens.

Apple iPhone Duo opened to its foldable display

Apple says it is aware of an issue affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units after reports that damaged hinges were followed by cracked inner displays.1 The company’s response, reported through a statement shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, directs affected owners to AppleCare for a replacement.1

That is a significant update to a story that initially sat somewhere between a possible design weakness, a manufacturing defect and user misuse. Early reports showed several phones breaking around the hinge, while a durability test reproduced damage only after the device was deliberately bent backwards.1 The available evidence therefore did not establish that normal use was causing widespread failures.

What Apple has confirmed

Apple’s wording is narrow. It says the issue affects a “small number” of iPhone Duo units, but it has not publicly quantified that number in the statement quoted by TechRadar.1 Nor has it explained whether the affected phones share a production batch, hinge component or other manufacturing characteristic.

Apple’s product page describes iPhone Duo as a foldable phone with a titanium frame and hinge cover, Ceramic Shield protection and an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating.2 Those claims describe the intended product design, not a guarantee that every unit is unaffected by the reported problem. The company’s support instruction is the clearest practical guidance available: owners who experience display issues should contact AppleCare for a replacement.1

The distinction between reported damage and confirmed defect remains important. Some users described hinges cracking during ordinary ownership, while a teardown and video test raised the possibility that at least some failures involved force beyond normal handling.1 Apple’s acknowledgement makes the situation more serious, but it does not yet show how common the problem is or whether the root cause is design-related.

What iPhone Duo owners should do

Owners who notice hinge damage, display lines, black areas or other inner-screen problems should stop testing the mechanism and contact AppleCare. Photographs of the damage, purchase details and the device’s serial information may help with a support claim. Deliberately bending the phone to reproduce the failure risks turning a suspected defect into additional damage and will not answer how many units are affected.

Potential buyers should also treat the “crackgate” label cautiously. It is useful shorthand for a developing hardware story, but it suggests a confirmed, widespread design flaw that the current evidence does not prove. Apple’s statement confirms an issue exists in a small number of units; it does not confirm the scale, cause or long-term reliability of the wider iPhone Duo range.

Our opinion

Apple has done the right thing by acknowledging the reports and pointing affected owners towards replacement support, but “small number” is not enough detail for a premium foldable phone. The next useful step is a clearer explanation of the affected units and whether the company has changed production or inspection procedures. Until that arrives, the sensible conclusion is neither “every iPhone Duo is fragile” nor “there is nothing to see”: a real hardware issue has been acknowledged, and its size is still unknown.
