Android Auto Gemini bug loops on call names
Users report that Gemini repeatedly asks who they want to call or message instead of completing the voice command.
Our opinion
This is the sort of bug that makes an assistant feel less dependable precisely because the advertised feature is conversational. Repeating the same question is more frustrating than a clear failure message, particularly when the driver cannot safely intervene. Until Google publishes a fix or workaround, the sensible approach is to keep important calls and messages ready before setting off rather than relying on Gemini to recover mid-journey.12
What is happening
Gemini on Android Auto is reportedly getting stuck in a loop when users try to call or message someone by voice. Instead of recognising the contact and completing the command, the assistant repeatedly asks who the driver wants to call or send a message to.1
The reports were gathered by 9to5Google from Google's Android Auto Help Community, where users describe saying the same name several times without Gemini moving on. The issue appears to have been reported across more than one phone and Android Auto build, rather than being limited to a single handset or release.13
Google's official Android Auto page confirms that Gemini is being integrated into the in-car experience for natural-language requests, including composing messages and handling everyday tasks while driving.2 The reported failure affects that basic voice-command flow: the assistant hears the request but appears unable to resolve the contact name, then returns to the same clarification question.1
The reports began appearing in October and have increased more recently, according to the linked community threads. Some users have also described Android Auto answering calls automatically, although 9to5Google characterises that as a separate and more isolated problem.13
Google has not announced a fix in the cited reports. Android Auto and Gemini are updated regularly, so the behaviour could be corrected through a server-side change or a future app update, but drivers should not treat that as confirmed until Google acknowledges it.12
