Google trims Gemini model access for AI Plus and free users

Google is dropping Gemini Flash for free users and Gemini Pro for AI Plus subscribers, with the first changes landing on 9 October 2026.

Google is narrowing which Gemini models each subscription tier can reach. From 9 October 2026, personal-account users on the free tier lose access to the Gemini Flash model and are left with Flash-Lite.

Google AI Plus subscribers lose the more capable Gemini Pro model but keep both Flash and Flash-Lite. Pro stays available on the higher AI Pro and AI Ultra plans.

Google says AI Plus subscribers will receive an email setting out when the change applies to them, because the rollout takes effect on different dates for different plans.

The same support note confirms that usage is moving to a compute-based limit that refreshes every five hours until a weekly cap is reached. Google lists the allowance as standard without a plan, double that on AI Plus, four times higher on AI Pro and five to 20 times higher on AI Ultra.

The changes apply to personal accounts rather than business or education accounts, and they follow an earlier round of usage-limit revisions that began on 17 May 2026.

Why you should care: Gemini Pro was the main reason many people paid for AI Plus, which sat between the free tier and the pricier AI Pro plan. Losing access to it turns the entry subscription into a storage and usage-limit upgrade rather than a route to Google's strongest model.

Our opinion

Quietly trimming a paid tier's headline model is a sharp lesson in how loosely the word subscription is used for AI. The people most affected are unlikely to be power users chasing benchmarks; they are the ones who upgraded for exactly one feature. Google should be far clearer about whether Pro is coming back to AI Plus or leaving it for good.
