Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake gets a native PC port
The LASRecomp project brings Nintendo’s 2019 Switch remake to native Windows, macOS and Linux builds, with widescreen and randomiser features.
Fans have released a native PC port of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake, bringing the 2019 Nintendo Switch game to Windows 11, macOS and Linux through the LASRecomp project. 1
What the project does
LASRecomp describes itself as a static recompilation of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for Nintendo Switch into native Windows, macOS and Linux applications. 2 The project’s listed features include widescreen support, higher resolutions, alternative controller prompts, blur removal and a randomiser mode that can reshuffle items, dungeons and enemies. 1
The remake has previously been playable on computers through emulation. A native recompilation is a different approach: it translates the game into platform-specific software rather than asking an emulator to reproduce the Switch environment. The project says users must provide their own game data, so it is not a replacement for legally obtaining the game.
An unusual role for AI
The project’s maintainer says most of the code, tooling, reverse engineering and documentation were produced with Anthropic’s Claude, with human direction, testing and review. 2 That makes LASRecomp part of a growing wave of fan projects using AI-assisted development to tackle work that traditionally required a much larger team and a longer schedule.
Nintendo has not announced an official PC version of Link’s Awakening. The project is therefore a fan-made release, and its future could depend on how Nintendo responds to an unofficial port of one of its Switch games.
Our opinion
LASRecomp is technically fascinating, especially because it targets a modern Switch remake rather than an older cartridge-era game. But “native” does not mean officially supported: users should treat it as an enthusiast project, supply only their own game data and expect rough edges while the code continues to mature.
