Tesla says the second-generation Roadster will be revealed on 1 October
Tesla has posted a “Go for launch” teaser pointing to 1 October, reviving the long-delayed second-generation Roadster — although production still appears to be further away.
Tesla has signalled that it will reveal the second-generation Roadster on 1 October. According to TechCrunch, the company posted “Go for launch” on X alongside a graphic showing “10.01”.1
The Roadster was first announced in November 2017 and has been pushed back repeatedly.1 Tesla has not yet supplied a full production timetable in the announcement covered here, so the reveal date should not be confused with customer deliveries.
The teaser also appears to hint at the cold-gas thrusters previously promised for the car. Those optional thrusters are being developed by SpaceX, according to the report, and have been described as allowing the Roadster to fly in some way.1 That remains a claimed feature, not a verified demonstration of a production vehicle.
TechCrunch says The Information recently reported that Tesla had abandoned the 2017 version for a new design. Elon Musk has also previously acknowledged that production could begin 12 to 18 months after the eventual reveal.1 In other words, October may finally provide a proper look at the car without putting one in a garage any time soon.
Our opinion
A reveal is welcome, but Tesla has spent nearly nine years turning the Roadster into a rolling calendar reminder. Judge the car on a firm production schedule, final specifications and deliveries — not on a dramatic teaser or the promise of a flying option.
