Teenage Engineering is reintroducing its EP–2350 FX–MIC in a new colourway, bringing its deliberately lo-fi performance microphone back with built-in effects, sample playback and motion-controlled modulation.

More than just a microphone

The EP–2350 FX–MIC is designed to sit somewhere between a microphone, a small sampler and a performance instrument.

It includes four built-in voice effects: echo, echo and spring, pixie and robot.

Effect parameters can be adjusted live using the microphone’s modulation lever. The unit also includes a shake sensor, allowing movement to alter the sound while performing.

That makes it less about recording a clean vocal and more about turning the person holding the microphone into part of the effects chain. It is not trying to replace a studio microphone. Teenage Engineering is clear that the FX–MIC is lo-fi by design, which is a polite way of saying pristine vocal production is not the point here.

Load your own sounds

The microphone includes four replaceable sample slots and 1MB of sample storage. Users can load their own sounds and trigger them directly from the microphone.

Custom effect presets can also be created with a simple JSON file. That gives the EP–2350 more flexibility than its toy-like appearance suggests. Users can change the effect behaviour, assign parameters and build a setup that suits their performance rather than accepting the factory presets as gospel.

The microphone can be used on its own with a speaker or sound system, or connected to Teenage Engineering’s K.O. II sampler. Its output uses a 3.5mm curly cable, keeping the setup compact and appropriately unusual.

A portable performance tool

The EP–2350 runs from two AAA batteries or USB-C power. Teenage Engineering lists the microphone at 88 × 56 × 16mm and 100g, making it small enough to throw into a bag without needing to reorganise your entire music setup around it.

The design is aimed at live experimentation rather than traditional vocal recording. You can trigger samples, alter effects with the lever, shake the unit to modulate the sound and route the result into a sampler, mixer, speaker or other recording equipment.

Our opinion

The EP–2350 FX–MIC is exactly the sort of product that makes sense in Teenage Engineering’s catalogue: small, visually distinctive and just strange enough to encourage people to use it incorrectly in interesting ways.

At $59, it is also far more approachable than much of the company’s hardware. The four effects and four sample slots are limited, but the shake sensor, modulation lever and editable JSON presets give it enough personality to avoid being just another novelty microphone.

The real appeal is immediacy. There is no menu-heavy software workflow or intimidating rack of equipment between the performer and the result. Plug it in, make a noise, move the lever, shake the microphone and see what happens.

The EP–2350 will not be the right microphone for clean vocals, podcasting or anyone who considers distortion a personal insult. But for live performance, quick experimentation and making a setup feel more playful, it looks like a charmingly compact bit of nonsense.
