SAP brings AI roleplays to certification renewals

SAP is offering AI-powered customer roleplays as an alternative way for professionals to renew more than 100 certifications.

SAP is adding AI-powered roleplays to the ways professionals can renew more than 100 of its certifications, giving learners an alternative to a conventional assessment quiz. The scenarios are designed to test how someone applies current SAP knowledge in a simulated customer conversation rather than simply recalling product facts. 12

The change is part of SAP’s Stay Certified programme. According to SAP’s certification FAQ, certified learners return at least once a year to demonstrate their knowledge and extend the validity of their credential. They can choose between multiple-choice assessments and shorter practical AI-roleplay assessments, depending on the certification. 1

Computerworld reports that the new scenarios use a defined knowledge goal and content based on recent SAP product releases. The roleplay provides immediate feedback on what went well and what needs improvement. SAP has presented the move as part of a wider shift towards validating whether professionals can use their knowledge in real situations, rather than relying only on tests of memory. 2

The AI option is not compulsory. Professionals can still choose a standalone assessment quiz when renewing, while the standard renewal process remains tied to the certification’s eligibility rules. SAP’s FAQ says the Stay Certified assessment can be completed during a 90-day window before a credential expires, with a successful assessment extending validity for 12 months from the original expiry date. 1

What SAP is changing

The practical difference is the type of evidence a learner is asked to provide. A quiz can show whether someone recognises the right answer, but a roleplay can ask them to respond to a customer-style problem and explain a recommendation. That makes the exercise closer to the work SAP consultants and administrators are expected to perform, at least in principle.

The change also gives SAP control over both sides of the process: it supplies the software knowledge behind the scenarios and the AI that plays the customer and evaluates the exchange. That could make renewals more relevant as SAP’s cloud products change, but it also makes consistency and transparency important. Learners need to know how responses are scored, what the AI considers a valid answer and how an incorrect assessment can be challenged.

SAP Learning Hub subscribers can use the company’s learning and certification resources, while professionals without a subscription can still purchase and retake a certification exam each year, according to SAP’s FAQ. 1 The renewal model therefore combines a more applied assessment option with a commercial training ecosystem rather than replacing the existing certification path overnight.

Our opinion

Moving certification renewal towards demonstrated application is more convincing than asking experienced professionals to repeat trivia about software that may have changed since they first qualified. The roleplay format is a sensible direction, particularly for customer-facing work where communication and problem definition matter as much as product recall.

But the AI assessor cannot be treated as a black box. SAP should publish clear scoring guidance, explain how scenarios are calibrated across certifications and provide a meaningful appeal route. A practical test is only better than a quiz if candidates can trust the way it judges practical answers. The concept is promising; the credibility of the rollout will depend on the evidence SAP provides about fairness and consistency. 12
