NVIDIA agrees to acquire Hugging Face for US$12.93 billion

NVIDIA has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for US$12.93 billion, bringing one of the biggest open-source AI platforms under the ownership of the company best known for supplying the industry’s accelerators.

Hugging Face hosts more than three million models and is used by over 18 million developers, according to the announcement and corroborating reports. That gives NVIDIA a direct route into the software, tools and community built around modern open-source AI.

A very large AI handshake

NVIDIA says the acquisition will scale Hugging Face’s platform, strengthen its infrastructure and expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide. The stated pitch is to combine NVIDIA’s computing resources with Hugging Face’s model hub, datasets and developer tooling.

The agreed value is US$12,930,300,000 — roughly €11.0 billion or £9.5 billion using a simple exchange-rate approximation. Completion remains subject to customary conditions, and neither side has presented this as an instant change to what users can download today.

The deal follows years of increasingly tight links between AI hardware and software. NVIDIA wants its chips to be useful across training, inference and agent development, while Hugging Face has become a major place where researchers and developers publish, discover and run models. Owning that meeting point could help NVIDIA make its hardware stack harder to ignore, but it also puts an open-source community inside a company with obvious commercial interests.

What happens to open source

The important unanswered question is governance. NVIDIA promises broader access and stronger infrastructure, but has not spelled out every future policy for model hosting, pricing, moderation, APIs or compatibility with rival hardware. Developers will be watching closely to see whether Hugging Face remains a broad meeting place for the AI ecosystem.

This is a business deal, not a public product launch. No new GPU or subscription is being announced, and no immediate change to hosted models has been confirmed.

Our opinion

This is a colossal acquisition because Hugging Face is infrastructure for the open-source AI conversation, not merely a company with a few clever models. NVIDIA can bring serious compute and distribution, but the community is right to worry about neutrality, pricing and hardware lock-in.

For now, the sensible verdict is cautiously interested. If NVIDIA funds Hugging Face without narrowing its horizons, developers may get a stronger platform. If the model hub becomes a shop window for one chipmaker’s priorities, US$12.93 billion will have bought NVIDIA a very expensive source of friction.
