Microsoft sets a Windows and Surface event for 7 October

Microsoft has booked its first proper Windows showcase in more than two years. The company will hold a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on 7 October, where chief executive Satya Nadella, Pavan Davuluri, the executive vice president who runs Windows and Devices, and Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang will discuss what the company calls the latest innovations across Windows, NVIDIA RTX Spark, Surface and the broader PC ecosystem.

The Verge, which reported the invitation on 15 September, quotes Microsoft billing the session as a conversation on "how local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC". It starts at 10:00 Pacific Time, which is 18:00 in London and 19:00 in Berlin. Thurrott.com, which reported the event a day later, notes that it lands between IFA 2026 in Berlin and Microsoft's Ignite conference in the same city on 17-20 November.

What to expect on 7 October

The guest list points at silicon rather than software. Nvidia and its partners said at IFA 2026 that PCs built around the RTX Spark chip would arrive in October, so Huang appearing on a Windows stage is unlikely to be a coincidence. Thurrott describes RTX Spark as an Arm-based chip, which puts it on the same architectural footing as the Qualcomm silicon Microsoft has been pushing since 2024.

The Surface Laptop Ultra, announced at Microsoft's Build developer conference in June, is the hardware most likely to get stage time. Thurrott frames the whole event as the Windows ecosystem's answer to Apple's Mac line-up on M6 and M5 Ultra chips, while warning that RTX Spark machines will not be cheap.

There may be a software announcement as well. Windows 11 version 26H2, the next feature update for the operating system, has been available to Windows Insiders on the Release Preview Channel since late August. Thurrott reports that Microsoft could use the event to announce its public rollout, which would arrive as an enablement package - a small download that switches on features already sitting on your machine rather than installing anything new, which is how Microsoft has shipped recent Windows updates.

Two years is a long silence

Microsoft's last major Windows event was in May 2024, when it unveiled Arm-based Copilot+ PCs and a renewed partnership with Qualcomm. Before that, the last one was June 2021, when Windows 11 was announced on a livestream. The Verge's Tom Warren, who has covered Microsoft for more than 20 years, says he is not expecting a surprise Windows 12 announcement, and expects quality-of-life improvements to Windows to feature. Our opinion

Two years is a long time to leave your flagship product without a stage, and the guest list explains why Microsoft is coming back now: with Huang on the bill, this is a chip announcement wearing an operating system's clothes. "Local AI" has been the industry's favourite phrase since 2023, and the honest test on 7 October is not whether Copilot can do something new - it is whether any of it justifies the price of the hardware needed to run it. Microsoft's real problem is not a shortage of AI features, it is that Apple spent the same two years making quiet, fast, all-day laptops the baseline, and an expensive Arm-based machine that shouts about neural processing is not obviously the answer to that. If the Surface Laptop Ultra turns out to be lovely and unaffordable, the next chapter of the PC will read a lot like the last one: excellent hardware most people admire from a distance.
