Microsoft says Windows 11 improvements can help sell new PCs

Microsoft is bundling Windows 11 performance improvements and a 25-game Xbox offer into its case for buying a new PC.

Microsoft is using a broad set of Windows 11 improvements, from a faster Search experience to better memory management and gaming features, to make the case for buying a new PC. The company says the latest work is designed to make everyday use feel faster and more dependable, while a separate holiday offer adds a collection of 25 Xbox games for eligible US Windows 11 PC purchases.12

What Microsoft is changing

The Windows Experience Blog says the refreshed Windows 11 experience is up to 20% more responsive across areas including Start, File Explorer, Search, Snipping Tool, Microsoft 365 and Edge. Microsoft attributes that figure to work across the platform, shell and built-in apps, although the company notes that actual results vary by device, configuration and usage.1

Memory management is another part of the pitch. Microsoft says PCs with 8GB of memory can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory instead of moving it to slower storage. On PCs with 8GB or less, Widgets load only when opened, which the company says can make more than 200MB available for other work. These are efficiency claims rather than a promise of identical gains for every machine, but they show where Microsoft's effort is focused: making modest hardware feel less constrained.

Windows Search is also becoming more action-oriented. Windows Insiders can test an interface that lets people carry out tasks directly from search results, such as changing settings or managing windows without opening another destination. The new experience is rolling out more broadly later, so availability will depend on Microsoft's testing and release schedule.1

Microsoft also highlights quicker AirPods pairing, improved Bluetooth reliability, more capable Phone Link features, Windows Hello changes and a cleaner Widgets experience. For PC gaming, Advanced Shader Delivery precompiles shaders for supported games including Forza Horizon 6 and Gears of War: E-Day, with the aim of reducing initial loading and first-launch stutter.1

The Xbox bundle for new PCs

The upgrade argument comes with a promotion. Eligible Windows 11 PCs bought in the US from participating retailers between 2 November and 31 December 2026 can claim 25 PC games worth more than $500 in total, while supplies last.2 The collection includes The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Minecraft Dungeons and Gears of War: Reloaded.

The bundle is linked to the buyer's Microsoft account and can be claimed through the Microsoft Store. Microsoft warns that some eligible devices cannot run every game, and the promotion is US-only. That makes the offer useful as an incentive, but it is not a universal bonus for every Windows 11 machine sold worldwide.

Our opinion

Microsoft's pitch is more convincing when it talks about a collection of small improvements than when it implies that Windows 11 alone should trigger an upgrade. Faster search, less background memory use and better phone integration could make a difference on an older PC, but the size of that difference will depend heavily on the hardware already on your desk. The 25-game bundle is the sharper hook for US buyers shopping during the holiday period, provided the chosen PC can actually run the games included.
