The Jellyfin team’s official release post describes 12.0 as the new stable release, finishing what the database conversion started in earlier versions and turning the new foundation into real performance work. The release also gives books and comics the support the project says they have deserved for years.
Coverage from Help Net Security notes that Jellyfin 12.0 also brings security fixes alongside the removal of legacy client logins, and multiple outlets warn that the version jump includes breaking changes that may affect plugins and older clients.
Our opinion
Jellyfin remains the most credible open-source answer to subscription media servers, and version 12 is the release where the boring work — databases, plumbing — starts paying visible dividends. The breaking plugin and client changes will sting some home-server enthusiasts, but that is the price of a codebase being dragged into the present. Free software that gets faster and uglier-to-upgrade in the same release is still free software doing its job.
