Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to need a day-one software update, with the iPhone Duo shipping on an earlier build of iOS 27.1 than the version Apple is currently distributing to reviewers.1

Why the iPhone Duo needs an update

MacRumors reports that the iPhone Duo is shipping with iOS 27.1 build 24A94232, while Apple has released build 24A94425. The newer build is expected to address bugs found while the device is being evaluated, although Apple has not publicly listed the complete change log.1

Apple announced iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display and the A20 Pro chip.2 The company says the device adapts iOS to both screen sizes and is designed for multitasking, gaming and general content consumption.2

Release dates and what buyers should expect

Pre-orders begin on 16 October, with availability following on 23 October, according to Apple’s launch announcement.2 That gives the company time to replace the shipping build before retail units reach customers, so not every buyer will necessarily see the same update prompt during setup.

The early software update is not unusual for a new product, particularly one introducing a new foldable form factor. It does mean buyers should allow time for an installation before judging the phone’s battery life, performance or display behaviour on the first day.

Our opinion

A day-one update is hardly a crisis, but it is a useful reminder that a completely new iPhone design brings software risks as well as hardware novelty. The iPhone Duo’s two-screen experience is doing more than adding a hinge: iOS has to move between different layouts while keeping apps and system features coherent. Until Apple publishes a fuller change log, the sensible takeaway is simple: expect an update during setup, and do not mistake that routine patch for evidence that the finished product is unstable.
