Google brings Gemini’s desktop app to Windows with an Alt + Space shortcut
Google has launched a Gemini desktop app for Windows, bringing quick access, Gemini Spark and additional AI features to x64 and ARM64 PCs running Windows 10 or later.
Google is moving Gemini out of the browser tab and into the Windows desktop, where it will compete directly with Microsoft’s built-in AI tools and every other assistant already squatting in a keyboard shortcut.
What is happening
Google’s official Gemini desktop page provides a Windows download for PCs running Windows 10 or later on both x64 and ARM64 systems. The app can be invoked with Alt + Space, giving users quick access while they work in other applications. Google says additional native Windows features will arrive over time.
9to5Google reports that Gemini Spark can act as a personal AI agent with access to Connected Apps, while the described desktop experience also includes image and video generation. Regional rollout, account eligibility, enterprise availability and the precise Windows feature comparison remain less clear than the download button.
The Windows launch follows Gemini’s earlier move to macOS and shows Google treating the assistant as an operating-system habit rather than a website people visit when they remember it exists. The convenience is obvious; so are the questions about permissions, privacy and whether users want another assistant hovering one shortcut away from everything they are doing.
Our opinion
The Alt + Space shortcut is sensible, but a shortcut is not a strategy. Gemini on Windows will be useful if it can work across apps without becoming intrusive, confused or mysteriously enthusiastic about permissions. Google has the distribution to make this stick; now it needs to explain the boundaries clearly. A desktop assistant should feel like a helpful colleague, not a very eager intern rummaging through your filing cabinet.
