Gemini comes to Google Maps on Apple CarPlay

Google is bringing conversational Gemini navigation to Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, starting with US drivers and expanding globally.

Google is bringing its conversational Gemini assistant to Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, giving drivers a way to ask for directions and places without relying on a sequence of fixed voice commands. The rollout is available to US drivers first, with Google saying the wider launch is also under way. 23

The change puts Gemini inside Google Maps rather than turning it into a separate CarPlay app. Users can tap the Gemini icon while navigating and ask multi-step questions, such as finding somewhere to stop and then directing them there while avoiding toll roads. Google describes the broader Gemini navigation experience as a hands-free way to find places, report traffic problems and handle more involved requests. 12

What CarPlay users can ask

The practical difference is context. A driver can ask for a recommendation along a route, follow up with a request to navigate there, or ask Maps to find a particular type of stop. That is more useful than repeating a destination search from scratch, although the exact feature set may vary as the rollout reaches more countries. 12

The initial report places the Apple CarPlay launch with US users, while Google says its wider Gemini in Maps rollout covers regions where Gemini is available. Google has not yet published a complete country-by-country list for the CarPlay update, so drivers outside the US may see the feature arrive at different times. 23

The update also shows why Google is pushing Gemini into navigation: conversational follow-ups can keep a driver inside the map while changing the request. That does not remove the need to check a route before setting off, but it could make awkward multi-step searches less distracting when the feature works as intended.

Our opinion

Gemini makes more sense in Maps than as another standalone assistant because the useful context is already on the screen: the route, nearby places and the next decision a driver needs to make. Apple CarPlay users are getting the kind of conversational navigation Android Auto users have been waiting for, but the rollout will only feel complete when Google clearly explains regional availability and which Gemini features are included on each platform. 12
