Coolpad unveils the Cool X Wide with a 16:10 display

Coolpad’s unusual Cool X Wide pairs a 16:10 display with a Helio G99 chip, 50MP camera and 4,600mAh battery.

Coolpad has listed the Cool X Wide for pre-order in China, introducing an unusual wide-bar smartphone with a 6.38-inch display built around a 16:10 aspect ratio.12

The LCD panel runs at 90Hz and has an HD resolution. That shape is considerably wider than the tall screens used by most current Android phones, making the Cool X Wide closer in proportions to the display on a compact tablet than a conventional handset.2

A wide screen with mid-range hardware

The phone uses MediaTek’s Helio G99 chipset, paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. It also includes a microSD slot, dual-SIM support and a 4,600mAh battery. Android 16 is installed out of the box.12

Coolpad lists a 50-megapixel main rear camera alongside a macro sensor, although the company has not disclosed the specification of the selfie camera in the available listing. The official JD.com product page shows the phone in white, with the rear camera module placed across the upper section of the handset and the front display using a bright blue X-themed image.1

Pricing and wider availability remain less clear. The JD.com listing advertises a starting pre-order price of 999 yuan for the 8GB/128GB configuration, while GSMArena notes that other details and availability have not been fully confirmed.12 A UK or European launch has not been announced in the sources checked for this report.

Our opinion

The Cool X Wide is interesting less because of its mid-range specification than because it challenges the default phone shape. A 16:10 panel could make reading, split-screen apps and some games more comfortable, but it will also be awkward to hold and may leave ordinary portrait software looking poorly adapted. Coolpad’s decision to pair the unusual screen with a familiar Helio G99 platform makes the design experiment easier to price, but the phone’s appeal outside China will depend on software support and a genuinely useful case for going wide.
