Bluecore Energy raises $50M to put small reactors on floating barges
Bluecore Energy has announced an oversubscribed $50 million seed round, just months after a $10 million pre-seed, to build small nuclear reactors on floating barges for ports and nearby infrastructure.

Bluecore Energy has announced an oversubscribed $50 million seed round, just months after a $10 million pre-seed, to build small nuclear reactors on floating barges for ports and nearby infrastructure.
TechCrunch reports that Bluecore Energy, founded earlier this year by Kofi Asante, builds small modular reactors (SMRs) on floating barges rather than at fixed locations, generating clean energy for ports and nearby infrastructure. Asante compares the approach to naval nuclear propulsion: “The Navy is doing this as we speak, for the last 70 years, and has never had an accident.”
According to TechCrunch, pre-seed investors including Slauson & Co., Harlem Capital and Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen doubled down, with new capital from Collab Capital and others. No reactor design details, licensing timetable or regulatory status were published alongside the announcement.
Our opinion
Floating SMRs are a genuinely interesting answer to a real problem: ports need enormous power, and the grid often cannot supply it. Borrowing seven decades of naval reactor discipline is a fair argument. But maritime nuclear regulation barely exists for civilian barges, and a $50 million seed buys design work, not deployment. This is a bet on a regulatory future as much as a technical one.
