The verdict
The Bambu Lab A2L Combo is a great large-format 3D printer with a very capable cutter and plotter bolted on. The clean prints, ease of use and huge build area are exceptional.

I have used plenty of 3D printers over the years, but the Bambu Lab A2L is my first proper stretch with a Bambu Lab machine. After a month of printing, cutting, plotting and filling the house with colourful plastic objects, I finally understand the hype.

The A2L takes a hobby that can involve levelling beds, adjusting temperatures, clearing blocked nozzles and swearing at failed first layers, then turns it into something close to a regular appliance. You load filament, let it calibrate and start printing. It even got my family excited to make something for the first time, which is more impressive than another specification sheet. We bought more filament colours than we knew what to do with, and 3D printing felt exciting again.

Setup is almost suspiciously painless

There is some assembly required, but Bambu Lab makes the process straightforward. The instructions are clear, and every set of screws comes in its own labelled bag. It was easy enough for a 10-year-old to help assemble, which is exactly why I used the free child labour available at home.

The only real stumble came when attaching the AMS Lite filament tubes to the print head. It is not difficult once you understand it, but the instructions could explain that step more clearly. After that, the experience is refreshingly simple: load the filament, run the calibration routine and send over a model from Bambu Studio or the Bambu Handy app.

The A2L has a generous 330 × 320 × 325mm build volume, a direct-drive extruder, automatic bed levelling, a heated textured PEI plate, Wi-Fi and a 3.5-inch touchscreen. Its footprint is 544 × 529 × 505mm and it weighs 12.8kg.

That last point matters. The A2L is not a printer you casually squeeze beside the kettle. It needs a sturdy table and enough surrounding space for the moving bed, the filament system and access to the machine. Measure your proposed desk before ordering it, unless you enjoy discovering that your new printer has claimed an entire room.

Big prints, very little drama

The large build plate is one of the A2L’s biggest strengths. You can print larger objects without splitting them into several pieces, or fill the bed with smaller models in a single run. Despite the size, prints come out remarkably clean. First layers were generally drama-free, details were sharp and cleanup was minimal.

Bambu Studio helps enormously. It is approachable for beginners but capable enough for experienced users, while Bambu Handy makes finding, preparing and sending a model far less fiddly than on many rival machines. The whole process feels closer to ordering a document from a printer than conducting a small engineering experiment.

Before each print, the A2L performs a short vibration calibration. It is enthusiastic enough that I can feel it through the floor, briefly raising the question of whether the neighbours think I have started construction. It is not a serious problem, but give the printer a solid table.

The built-in camera makes excellent timelapses. Watching an object grow out of the bed never gets old. The live feed is less impressive, with a low frame rate and an angle that does not always show the whole bed. It is fine for checking that the printer has not begun manufacturing a plastic spaghetti monster, but less useful for diagnosing small problems remotely.

More colours, more waste

The AMS Lite holds four spools and automatically feeds the selected colour. With Bambu Lab’s tagged filament, it can identify colour and material itself. Loading is dead simple: spool on the spindle, feed the filament and carry on.

Multicolour printing is where the A2L becomes a family attraction. Four colours instead of one sounds modest, but the results can be spectacular. A basic model suddenly becomes something you actually want to display rather than hide in a drawer beside the cables nobody knows the purpose of.

There is a cost beyond buying extra spools, though. One nozzle means purging the previous colour on every switch, producing a surprising amount of waste — affectionately known as printer poop — and adding real time to prints. Inefficient, yes, but some designs justify both the wait and the waste.

The AMS Lite is useful beyond multicolour printing. You can keep several materials loaded and automatically switch when one spool runs out. Its open design has a downside, however: the filament is exposed to humidity. In a damp city such as Mumbai, proper storage or a dry box is worth considering. The pricier AMS 2 Pro adds drying and can run alongside an AMS Lite.

A printer with stationery ambitions

The optional cutting and pen kit adds a whole new dimension. Installation is simple: remove the front cover and control dial, attach the module, connect it and fit the adhesive cutting mat.

Unfortunately, no instruction booklet came with the kit, so I had to watch Bambu Lab’s YouTube guide. The cutting workflow also runs through Bambu Suite rather than the familiar Bambu Studio, and positioning designs requires a phone photo because the A2L has no overhead camera. It works, but this side of the machine feels noticeably less polished than the 3D-printing experience.

Skip generic printer paper, even on the light-grip side of the mat. Thin paper plus a sticky surface ended in disaster for me: I could not lift the cut design cleanly, and the pen dumped ink wherever it paused. Heavier stock of 120gsm or more, sticker paper and vinyl should work much better.

The blade deserves respect. It is properly sharp, and swapping it for the pen feels a little terrifying since you handle the module while its cover is off. That is not a job for the aforementioned child labour.

The cutting mat and pen workflow

Still, the cutter and plotter are excellent additions. The A2L can make stickers, paper designs, labels and heat-transfer vinyl without requiring a separate Cricut-style machine. It does not seem readily available locally yet, but it is worth grabbing once it is. Bambu Lab just needs to give the cutting software and documentation the polish it has given the printer.

The compromises

The printer is already large, its moving bed needs extra clearance and the AMS Lite expands things further. This is a serious piece of equipment, not a tiny gadget for the corner of a desk. The open frame also rules out demanding filaments such as ABS, ASA and nylon, which generally want an enclosure.

The A2L’s open design is otherwise well suited to PLA, PETG and TPU. That makes sense for its target audience, but it is worth understanding before buying. This is a large-format creative machine, not an enclosed engineering printer pretending to be one.

Bambu Lab lists the A2L Combo at €489 in its European store. Regional pricing, tax and availability vary, so buyers in the US, UK and Canada should check their local Bambu Lab store before ordering rather than trusting a currency conversion from somebody’s spreadsheet.

Verdict

The Bambu Lab A2L Combo is a great large-format 3D printer with a very capable cutter and plotter bolted on. It is not perfect: the accessories and software need work, the AMS Lite leaves filament exposed to humidity and the open frame limits material choice. But the clean prints, ease of use and huge build area are exceptional.

The AMS Lite adds real creative flexibility, even if single-nozzle colour changes create waste and extend print times. The cutting and pen tools are not quite as polished, but they can save craft fans from buying a second machine altogether.

More importantly, after a month with it, the A2L made 3D printing fun again. That is worth more than another graph showing a slightly faster print speed. The Bambu Lab A2L earns 88/100 and a B+ grade.
