WhatsApp hands parents a PIN-gated set of teen controls
Parents can set privacy defaults, follow group activity and pick a stricter Meta AI mode for teen accounts — all of it optional and all of it reversible.

WhatsApp has begun rolling out parental controls for teen accounts: a set of optional tools that parents and teenagers set up together, rather than a monitoring layer bolted on afterwards.
What parents can actually change
Privacy defaults come first. A parent chooses who can see their teen’s profile photo and who can add them to groups. If the teenager later wants any of those settings loosened, the change needs the parent’s approval through a parent-set PIN.
Group activity is reported rather than read. Parents are notified when a teen joins or leaves a group, or when a group the teen is already in grows meaningfully in size — alerts about membership and scale, not about what anyone typed.
Channels and Status are covered as well: parents decide how their teen uses Channels, whose Status updates the teen can see and who can see the teen’s own. Meta AI gets a setting of its own, with a choice between the default 13+ experience and a stricter “Limited Content” option.
Where the controls stop
WhatsApp is explicit that the conversation itself stays closed. Personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted and private even with the controls switched on, so no one outside a chat — WhatsApp and Meta included — reads the contents.
Everything is optional and reversible. The controls can be adjusted or switched off at any time, and WhatsApp describes this launch as the first step of a set it intends to build on feedback from families.
Our opinion
Parental controls usually arrive as a binary: nothing, or everything. The interesting thing here is the granularity — a PIN gate on privacy settings, membership-level group alerts, a stricter switch for Meta AI — because that is a design which assumes a teenager with a functioning social life rather than a suspect. The honest caveat is opt-in: a family already talking to each other will use this well, and a family that is not talking will not be helped by a settings screen. The end-to-end encryption line is the other thing worth holding onto, since it means these tools can never quietly become surveillance.
