Tencent is testing a free, ad-supported short-drama service inside WeChat, with social recommendations built into the mini program.

Tencent has launched a free short-drama mini program inside WeChat, adding another major platform to China’s fast-growing market for bite-sized, ad-supported video. 1

What Tencent has launched

The service, called Lüpaopao Duanju, offers live-action, animated and AI-generated dramas inside WeChat. Episodes are free to watch, with advertising shown between them, according to TechNode. 1

The mini program has a browsing section and a vertically scrolling recommendation feed. Its home page also highlights new series, viewing charts, and recommendations based on what friends and nearby users are watching. 1

Tencent is identified as the operator in the service’s user agreement. That means viewers can access the platform without downloading a separate app, putting Tencent closer to ByteDance’s Hongguo, which has already built a sizeable audience for free short dramas supported by advertising. 1

Why it matters

Short dramas are built around quick episodes, constant recommendations and frequent cliffhangers. Bringing that format into WeChat gives Tencent access to a huge existing audience and lets it test another form of entertainment without asking viewers to leave the app they already use for messaging and mini programs.

The launch was also reported by Beijing Daily, which TechNode cited in its coverage. 2 Tencent has not publicly detailed how widely Lüpaopao Duanju will roll out, how its recommendation system works, or whether the service will expand beyond its current market.

Our opinion

The important part of this launch is not that Tencent has invented short dramas; it has not. The interesting move is placing free, ad-funded episodes directly inside WeChat, where discovery can be shaped by social recommendations as well as by the usual algorithmic feed. That could make the format feel less like a standalone streaming app and more like another everyday WeChat service.

For now, the platform’s real test is whether Tencent can turn that built-in reach into regular viewing without making WeChat feel even more crowded. The launch is notable, but the size and influence of Lüpaopao Duanju will depend on what Tencent adds next.
