Spotify rolls out paid podcast Memberships in 34 regions

Spotify’s new Memberships feature lets eligible podcast creators sell bonus content, early access and fewer ads while keeping 90 per cent of revenue.

Spotify is rolling out its Memberships feature for podcast creators in 34 regions, giving shows a way to place bonus content, early access, extra episodes and reduced advertising behind a paid subscription. Listeners can find the option on a participating podcast’s Spotify page, subscribe in a few taps and access the benefits chosen by the creator. 12

A new paid layer for podcasts

Creators can set pricing options, bundle benefits into multiple tiers and keep 90 per cent of membership revenue, according to Spotify’s rollout details. The company is also adding tools to analyse and grow a Memberships audience, including targeted promotions, free trials and community features such as member badges and welcome clips. 1

The feature is separate from Spotify’s podcast subscription product introduced in 2021. Memberships are framed more like a Patreon-style support layer: the show can continue using advertising and the Spotify Partner Programme while offering its most committed listeners a direct route to extra material. 12

Eligibility is limited to shows hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone that have at least 100 consumption hours, 100 listeners or viewers, and three published episodes. Spotify says creators using Memberships will also receive audience insights and can use its Open Access feature to bring paywalled content managed elsewhere to the platform. 1

The rollout follows Spotify’s May announcement of Memberships as part of a wider set of creator-earnings tools. That earlier announcement described subscriber-only content and recurring revenue as the central proposition; the new launch turns that promise into a product available across a defined group of regions. 2

Our opinion

Memberships gives podcasters a clearer middle ground between ordinary advertising and moving an entire show behind a paywall. The 90 per cent revenue share is attention-grabbing, but the feature will live or die on whether creators can offer benefits that feel genuinely additional rather than simply withholding the best parts of a free feed. Its early-access and reduced-ad options may prove easier to sustain than producing a constant stream of bonus episodes.
