Replit makes OpenAI its preferred AI partner
Replit says OpenAI is now its preferred partner for Replit Agent, but customers can still access Anthropic models on the platform.
Replit says OpenAI is now its preferred partner for powering Replit Agent, replacing Anthropic as the company’s default provider even though customers can still choose Claude and other supported models. CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad disclosed the change during TechCrunch Disrupt, citing performance, partnership and cost as the reasons for the shift. 1
Masad told TechCrunch that Replit’s internal testing found OpenAI’s ChatGPT models better suited to building applications from scratch. He also said Replit’s own Sol and Astra systems performed better on the company’s public benchmark for its coding-agent workflows. The remarks describe a preference change rather than a complete removal of Anthropic models from Replit.
That distinction matters for developers. Replit’s model selector documentation still describes a platform where users can access supported models, while the company’s recent engineering writing discusses a model-agnostic approach to choosing different systems for different tasks. 2 3 In practical terms, OpenAI becomes the default route for Replit Agent, but Anthropic remains available to customers who select it where the platform supports it.
Replit had announced an OpenAI partnership in August. Before that deal, Anthropic’s Claude models were central to the platform, and Masad said the company had been one of Anthropic’s top-five customers. TechCrunch also reported that people familiar with the partnership disputed the idea that Anthropic had been completely cut out, while Replit’s own recent material continued to mention Claude models in its production environment. 1
The change reflects the increasingly competitive economics of AI coding tools. Replit says its decision was based on a mix of cost, model performance and the broader partnership, while the company continues to present itself as model agnostic. That leaves the immediate user-facing change clear: OpenAI is the preferred default for Replit Agent, but the platform’s wider model choice has not disappeared.
Our opinion
Replit’s move is notable because it shows how quickly AI software companies can change the model underneath a popular product. The useful detail is not the headline claim that one provider has been dropped; it is the more nuanced reality that defaults, costs and model quality are shifting while users can still retain some choice. Replit’s conflicting signals about Anthropic also make careful wording essential: this is a change in preferred partner and default, not proof that Claude has vanished from the platform.
