OpenClaw 2026.9.5 updates itself without the restart
The open-source assistant platform ships atomic self-updates, plugins that load without a Gateway restart and GPT Live inside meetings and phone calls.
OpenClaw, the open-source system that plugs an AI assistant into the chat apps you already use, published version 2026.9.5 on 19 September. Its headline change is structural: the software now updates itself.
The release replaces the old update-and-hope routine with what the project calls atomic updates - the incoming version is checked before anything switches over. Plugins can be installed without restarting the Gateway, and conversations can be shared with another person rather than exported and pasted.

The larger additions push the assistant further into places a chat window does not reach. GPT Live arrives inside meetings and phone calls, browser pages can be worked on next to the agent instead of in a separate tab, and conversations are archived so you can return to them later. Setup can also assemble a small team of specialists - a chief of staff, a researcher, a writer and a reviewer - through a guided flow.
The project's own notes put the release at 4,179 pull requests and 64 direct commits from 502 contributing accounts, which is a lot of engineering for a point release. The repository passed 390,000 stars on GitHub, making it one of the better-followed open-source agent projects anywhere.
Our opinion
The unglamorous change is the one that matters. An assistant that has to be shut down before it can be updated is a tool you schedule around; one that verifies the next build and swaps it in underneath you is a tool you leave running. Restart-free plugins and self-updating code are how agent platforms stop being weekend projects and start being infrastructure.
The reach is the more interesting bet. Putting GPT Live into meetings and phone calls, with plugin code loading live, means the assistant stops waiting to be asked and starts sitting in the room. That is a genuine step up in usefulness and a genuine step up in risk, and the release notes do not engage with the second half at all. OpenClaw is getting very good at being everywhere; it has not yet shown that it can be everywhere safely.
