Apple unveils iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone

Apple has finally folded. The company has introduced iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, bringing a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer screen and a new dual-battery design to the familiar Apple hardware ecosystem.

The announcement is a substantial shift from Apple’s usual yearly refinement cycle. iPhone Duo is designed to work as a large-screen device when open and a compact phone when closed, with Apple promising a continuous experience between the two displays rather than a software wrestling match every time the hinge moves.

Apple says the inner display is its largest iPhone screen yet, while the outer display provides 90 per cent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Both displays share the same aspect ratio so content scales proportionally. The inner panel has a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and make the crease less visible.

The phone uses Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, an advanced thermal-management system with a custom vapour chamber and a dual-battery architecture. It is built from grade 5 titanium and comes in star white and night sky. Apple says the hinge uses more than 100 components and the device has an IP68 rating for splash, water and dust resistance.

Apple also says the front display uses Ceramic Shield 2, with three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The inner display combines a scratch-resistant coating, a nano-textured cover layer and strengthened glass around the folding panel. Those are manufacturer claims, so long-term durability will need real-world testing rather than keynote confidence.

The camera gets the foldable treatment

iPhone Duo has a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x Telephoto option, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and a new under-display FaceTime camera. Apple says the folding design enables features such as Duo Preview, which shows a live camera preview on the outer display, and Duo FaceTime, which lets other people join a call using that screen.

The phone also introduces Smart Take, where on-device AI models analyse a scene and automatically capture a photo when subjects are posing. Apple is adding 4K120 Dolby Vision recording, post-capture Cinematic effects and updated Audio Mix tools. These are ambitious features, but the useful question is whether the hinge makes everyday photography easier or simply gives Apple another set of branded camera modes.

Price and availability still matter

iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, which Apple has adapted for the foldable layout. The Dock, controls, navigation and widgets are reorganised to make better use of the taller displays. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI are also part of the pitch, with features designed to use personal context across the new hardware and software experience.

Pre-orders begin on Friday 16 October, with availability from Friday 23 October. Apple’s announcement gives the launch dates, colours, materials and headline features, but the material reviewed for this draft does not state a price. That omission makes it impossible to judge whether iPhone Duo is a serious foldable alternative or an extremely polished luxury experiment.

Our opinion

Apple has arrived at the foldable-phone party carrying the usual titanium briefcase and a vocabulary of “breakthrough” design. The hardware sounds impressively thought through, especially the dual-screen continuity and camera tricks. But until Apple reveals the price and users prove that the hinge survives life outside a press release, iPhone Duo is a fascinating first attempt — not yet an automatic recommendation.
