Apple HomeView repair can cost $279 without AppleCare

Apple’s estimated $279 out-of-warranty service fee for HomeView is only $20 below the smart display’s $299 purchase price.

Apple has published estimated service pricing for its new HomeView smart display, and the figures suggest an out-of-warranty repair could cost almost as much as buying the device itself. 1

The repair prices

Apple lists an estimated service cost of $279 for either the standard HomeView or the wall-mounted model when the device has suffered “other damage”. That is only $20 less than the $299 purchase price for either model. 1

The company does not currently break that fee down by component, so it is unclear whether Apple would repair a damaged screen, speaker or other part individually, or replace the whole unit. Apple’s support page says the final estimate depends on an inspection. 2

AppleCare changes the calculation considerably. The accidental-damage service fee is listed as $39 for both HomeView models, regardless of the type of damage described in the source report. 1

What Apple HomeView is

HomeView is a 7-inch smart display with a built-in speaker base, while the wall-mounted version is designed to sit elsewhere in the home. Both models cost $299 and are scheduled to begin shipping on 13 November. 1

Apple’s own product page positions HomeView as a central smart-home dashboard, with Siri AI, FaceTime, media playback and controls for connected accessories. The official page also shows the display running household features including cooking guidance and home controls. 3

Our opinion

The $279 fee is the awkward part of HomeView’s pricing story: a product designed to sit in busy kitchens, hallways and living spaces is exposed to exactly the sort of accidental damage that can make ownership expensive. AppleCare makes the risk more manageable, but it also turns the $299 device into a product whose sensible ownership cost depends partly on another subscription or protection purchase.

Until Apple publishes a clearer component-by-component breakdown, buyers should treat the $279 figure as the realistic worst-case service headline rather than proof that every repair means a full replacement.
