Anthropic's Q3 revenue reaches $16.8B as IPO hopes meet slower growth

Anthropic reportedly posted $16.8 billion in third-quarter revenue, but slower growth could weigh on investor expectations ahead of its planned November IPO.

Abstract financial-market display representing investor scrutiny around Anthropic's planned IPO

Anthropic’s reported third-quarter revenue has climbed to $16.8 billion, but the slower pace of growth is reportedly making investors less willing to accept the company’s eye-watering private valuation ahead of a planned November IPO.1

What the reported figures show

Anthropic shared the numbers with potential investors at a private San Francisco meeting, according to The Decoder’s reporting on figures also attributed to The Information and the Financial Times.123 Revenue was reportedly up by about 45% from the second quarter. That is a striking result on its own, but it follows a much sharper quarter-on-quarter jump of more than 140% as demand for Claude Code surged.1

The company is also reported to have reached adjusted profitability for a second consecutive quarter, with an 11% adjusted operating margin for the year through Q3. The measure excludes significant costs such as stock-based compensation, so it is not the same as saying Anthropic is fully profitable. The Financial Times reportedly said Anthropic generated $1.70 in revenue for every dollar spent on compute during the quarter.13

Why growth is the bigger story

The reported figures suggest that running advanced AI models at scale can produce meaningful revenue, even during a punishing price war. They also show why investors may be looking past the headline number. Anthropic’s growth is slowing from its earlier acceleration, while the company says 5% to 7% of revenue has come from distillation-related activity that could fall after new anti-theft measures.1

That makes the planned IPO a test of whether public-market investors still reward spectacular absolute growth when the trajectory is less spectacular. Anthropic’s private valuation reportedly reached $965 billion in May, while some bankers had discussed figures as high as $2 trillion. The Information says advisers could instead lower expectations to below $1.5 trillion.12

Our opinion

The useful takeaway is not that Anthropic’s growth has suddenly collapsed. A reported $16.8 billion quarter and adjusted profitability would still be extraordinary for an AI company. The harder question is how much of that momentum is repeatable once competition, compute costs and model-theft controls are factored in. A public listing would force Anthropic to answer that question with more regular disclosure than private investor meetings allow.

For now, these figures should be treated as reported investor materials rather than an audited public earnings release. The IPO timetable and valuation expectations may change before Anthropic files the documents that will give the market a fuller view.
