Firefox's AI now runs on Mistral, with the UK next

Firefox's AI browsing assistant now runs on a French model. Mozilla and Mistral announced a partnership on 16 September 2026 that puts Mistral Small 4 inside Smart Window, Firefox's AI assistant, for users in the United States and Canada, and opens the Smart Window beta to Firefox users in France with official French-language support. Mistral says the United Kingdom and Germany are expected to follow later this year.

What exactly has Mozilla switched on?

Mozilla chose Mistral Small 4 for Smart Window beta after evaluating its performance, and says multilingual handling was a core part of the fit rather than an afterthought bolted onto an English-first model. Mistral's models now power Smart Window for users in France and North America. The change adds a provider rather than removing one: across every market where the beta is live, Mozilla says Firefox users can still choose from a range of other AI models.

Why would Mozilla hand its AI to someone else?

Because the alternative, in Mozilla's account, is a handful of companies owning the browser, the search engine and the model at the same time. The company frames the deal as a bet that independent, interoperable models can offer an alternative to that concentration. "AI is becoming part of how people experience the web every day. We want to make sure that doesn't mean people are chained to one company's self-serving pipeline," said Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, chief executive of Mozilla Corporation. "This isn't just a product partnership. A browser shouldn't be a one-way funnel."

What does Mistral get out of it?

Reach into consumer software, which is not where Mistral has been earning its money. The company has spent two years selling models to enterprises and governments on the promise of European, open-weight alternatives. "This partnership represents two open source advocates working together to bring Mistral's scientific innovations to Mozilla's consumers around the world," said Arthur Mensch, Mistral's co-founder and chief executive. Mozilla puts the trade plainly: Mistral reaches Firefox users without having to own a browser, and Mozilla integrates Mistral without taking the other models away.

What happens to your data in Smart Window?

Mozilla says conversations are not saved on its servers by default, and that partners including Mistral agree to zero data retention. Those commitments cover the model provider and Mozilla's own storage. They do not, by themselves, settle what happens to the search trails and open tabs that Smart Window reads in order to be useful, which is the part of an AI browsing assistant most likely to trouble privacy-minded users. Mozilla has not published a data-flow diagram for the beta.

When does the UK get it?

Not yet, and there is no date. Mistral's announcement says the United Kingdom and Germany are expected to follow later this year, and Mozilla says it is planning additional European expansion during 2026. France is the first new market to get official French-language support. Until then, UK Firefox users keep whichever models Smart Window already offers them, and Mozilla has not said whether the Mistral model will be the default in the markets it reaches or simply one option among several.

Our opinion

The interesting question is who is compromising for whom. An American foundation is buying European AI as a hedge against American AI, and a company that has spent two years selling sovereignty to governments is taking consumer distribution through somebody else's software rather than building its own front door. The geography is where this gets awkward. "Later this year" for the UK and Germany is doing a lot of work in that announcement, because it implies the same Firefox shipping with different AI arrangements depending on where you live, and the reason for that is regulatory rather than technical. Mozilla's privacy line deserves the same scrutiny: not retaining a chat is not the same as processing it on your machine, and an assistant whose whole trick is understanding your tabs is still reading your tabs. Firefox's private-by-default reputation is the asset being spent here, and it is the thing to hold Mozilla to when the European rollout actually arrives.
